Okay so I've sat on this for a while, a couple of seasons really. To address the 'whats wrong with us' well I think it's interesting that when Mr. Beckham Jr. is addressed in trade rumors he's this coveted thing to be had by the entirety of the NFL but when we discuss keeping him in Cleveland he's this... idk red headed step-child of sorts. IDK who tweeted about this offhand but it was one of us and it got me thinking. So why do we want to cast aside Odell so easily? It doesn't seem that the team is as ready to move on from ODB as the fanbase is. We shit on Odell while we prop up guys like, I don't know, pick your favourite role-player. It's him. We are in an interesting predicament, as we don't know the upcoming salary cap and we have to renew some interesting contracts in our WR room. Do we pay everybody? Likely not. Higgins or Landry, probably one of the two is out which is very depressing for me to fathom but that's just my gut feeling that we don't have both those men on the roster in 2021. Add the 'star' spectre of Odell Beckham Jr. to the mix and I guess that's the closest thing the Cleveland Browns have to an offseason storyline. For that at least, I am thankful.
So why trade Odell?
Performance is the logical answer that comes to mind. The easiest counter-argument to that has been avaliability. Only playing 7 games in 2020 and having some rather pedestrian numbers during that time would lead anyone to speculate, and boy howdy they have. Now if I'm AB. I'm not trading Odell Beckham Jr. Period. That's the end of that. Conundrum solved. Right? Well maybe not. But for me here is why. The Browns might have to make a choice between Landry and Higgins. The reason for this is clear, we don't know what the salary cap for next season will be and speculation is that for the first time ever it could remain flat or even go down. Teams build their projections based on a cap that grows exponentially every year with inflation. This has resulted in a lot of speculation from the talking heads and some of that has spilled over into the aforementioned WR dilemma. We don't trade Odell because we don't have to. What we do have to do is decide whether or not to pay both Jarvis and Hollywood. Why not both? Well surely we can afford it as we have what the most cap space of any team in the NFL or we are up there yet again. Well the first thing that comes to mind is Baker Mayfield whose future contract looms large in our horizon. Surely AB is already considering that potential cap hit and formulating around it which is why, I believe, we will only bring back one of these two individuals. Who do we choose? Jarvis who has been an indispensable leader for our locker room and one of the primary reasons for our change in trajectory from dumpster fire to AFC contender or Rashard who has proven himself to have a unique chemistry with Baker as a pass-catcher even from his rookie season. IMO they will both perform a similar role in our offense and so to glut our depth chart and our cap-space by paying them both? Well it just doesn't make sense to me. So what say you? Who do we keep? Do we keep both?
