Ok folks, I would drop my .02 in as to who I would like us to target in the draft in 11 days.
The only pressing offensive need that I see us having is a speed WR. Shep loves Dyami Brown, and I pretty much agree. My first choice, even over Dyami, would be Ole Miss WR Elijah Moore.
Both of these guys would be welcomed here and both provide instant upgrades. But if you are going to sit in the big 💺, you need to be responsible for upgrading the entire team. Our needs on defense trumps the need for a speed WR.
Our signing of Jadeveon Clowney has eased the need for a pure edge rusher. But being able to pressure the QB is STILL the #1 priority in this draft. Whether that pressure is generated from the inside or outside is immaterial. Fortunately, there are realistic targets for us at 26.
I think one of my preferred targets at 26 would have to be Alabama DT Christian Barmore. He is just a brute force on the inside, capable of taking over a game by wreaking havoc on an opponent's game plan. He is the perfect pupil for who I think his pro comparison is - current Browns' DT Malik Jackson. Christian would help to fill the DL void created by Sheldon Richardson's release this week. And Christian was a redshirt sophomore this past year - meaning he will not yet be 27 when his second contract is due.
I think the only team we need to get ahead of if we wanted Christian would be the Jaguars, just one spot ahead. But if we are targeting the same player, you can bet the Jaguars would want us to overpay for that privilege.
So, if we would be trading up anyway, I would see what it would cost to get to the 14 to 16 range. If we could get there, two of the premium edge rushers are in play. Michigan and Miami Edge Rushers Kwity Paye and Greg Rousseau. Such a move would only come into focus on Thursday night as the draft is unfolding.
The other position I would want to address at 26 would be a true outside corner to play opposite Denzel. My favorite target in this entire draft would certainly require a trade up. I want Jaycee Horn of South Carolina. I absolutely love his game and size, but to get him you must get to the 10-14 range. Coming from 26, that guarantees you will be parting with our 2022 first rounder. But he may be that guy that completes our defense. And AB is certainly in a push all his chips to the center mood lately....
The only other corner I would consider at 26 is Ifeatu Melifonwu.
In one season, we have transitioned from needing every good player we could get to being able to justify paying a premium for the single stud player WE want. So if that player is not there, a trade down is not a horrible thing.
