To celebrate the Browns new uniform debut in 2020, I'm bringing this tradition begun by Ocon almost five years ago (Shepsclamation!) to this new venue! The original thread was for "what cool new combo are the Browns wearing this week?!?" but quickly became "what the literal fork are these uniforms?" to "let's discuss what the Browns uniforms should be in 2020" and "look at this cool new piece of merch I got". And BOOM, here we are in 2020! Of all the things that have gone awry in 2020, the Browns new/old uniforms aren't one of them. Many of us branding/uni geeks got our wish for a return to a classic kit with a little bit of modern flair for spice for the youngin's, and I personally love the new/old direction. So let's now use this space to continue the Browns uniform talk and merch geekery! 🍻
Starting the geekery talk, I'm really excited to get my first new/old jersey to compare it to the different iterations of "old" jerseys. I'm most intrigued by the color brown they chose this go-round and to see how the new number/letter font compares to the old. I've ordered my first new jersey so I'll post pics and a comparison soon but a cool tweak in this new kit is that they ever-so-slightly tweaked the numbers so that they aren't a traditional "block" any more. The new kit has a combo of straight-edge and rounded-edge on certain digits, most noticeably the 2, 5, 6 and 0. If you look at Baker's Color Rush and the new one, you'll see how the digit 6 is rounded. Very subtle but cool touch.
I never, ever get sick of uniform talk. My love affair with the all-brown kit, with no stripe on pants? It knows no bounds. I even mused about the stripelessness when there WERE stripes!
Can't wait. But I love all of the combos.
Gentlemen, LFG!!!!!
When I saw the Browns were donating 100% of jersey sales to Covid-19 relief/first responders, I thought to myself, "Self, how do we justify a new jersey?"
Why, a unique jersey, by repping my team and the public health heroes among us, of course!
This thing is pretty. A very classic look but a modern jersey feel. Love the 1946 in the collar. Unintentionally matches this sweet 1946 lid!
Gonna be a good year, fellas. Or at least, we'll look good!
Love this thread and the new threads!
Agree with all. Love the subtle number curves. It's surprising how many teams mess up numbers. Steelers are Bengals are not good. Patriots and Rams aren't my cup of tea either.
Dear lord, that is gorgeous. Who is EPI?
It is pretty, isn't it? They did a really nice job melding the modern materials/colors with the classic stripes/format. I'll post some more pics showing the comparison between the new and old. Pretty interesting to see them side-by-side. "Epi", pronounced "EH-pee", is short for "epidemiology" which the CDC defines as "By definition, epidemiology is the study (scientific, systematic, and data-driven) of the distribution (frequency, pattern) and determinants (causes, risk factors) of health-related states and events (not just diseases) in specified populations (neighborhood, school, city, state, country, global)."
In short, the folks who help tell us about disease and risk-factors for disease (and other health-related stuff, like car crashes and gun violence) are epidemiologists. If I was going to get a new jersey, I wanted something meaningful and timeless. This fit the bill. Oh, and 54 is not for Olivier Vernon (or Brian Urlacher, whose Bears jersey I also have, coincidentally) but in honor of John Snow, often credited as the founder of modern epi for his work in London in 1854. It didn't hurt that I have a thing for the digit 5, so I now have 50 (Faine), 95 (Garrett) and 54. Kinda cool pattern.
Alright, so more geekery incoming! I took some comparison shots of the new Nike 2020 jersey, next to the classic Reebok #50/Faine from the early 2000s, and also an AL-sleeve era leftover women's 4X blank (basically "women's" means shorter and wider than a men's cut, so I'm a 2X men's and the 4X women's is WAY too wide and slightly too short for me) that the Browns Shop slapped a 95/Garrett on to get rid of last year (so I bought one because duh, 4X women's, who could resist? 😝).
Some cool things to note: The new orange-is-oranger was retained, as was the new darker brown. The new brown is quite a bit darker than the 50, and similar to the 95.
You can clearly see the orange difference in the sleeve stripes. And the collar stripe and 1946 are in the classic orange shade, too! Very cool touch to make that little new feature intentionally retro. The letter font is definitely the new sans serif font introduced in 2015. The number font is a very cool tweak on the traditional Browns block, with the bottoms of many digits being rounded off, rather than traditionally squared block on every angle.
Here's a comparison with the Bears number font.
Excellent. Add da Bears, btw, to numbers I’m not a huge fan of!
I like the newer orange and the newer brown better.
Yeah, y'know, I never really thought to compare Browns and Bears side by side like this but this Browns classic number font is definitely somehow more rugged, more classic. But I do like the simplicity of the Bears font, and their outlined number works because of the totally unadorned font, as opposed to the Browns trying to drop shadow a block font, which, coupled with the hideous orange, made it all so busy.
Excellent Excellent Excellent. Ya know what would really fit your avatar? University of Minnesota jersey....
LOL, Brooksie. Nah. I chose the gopher originally because my MO is to pop up, say some shit, then disappear again. Since then, it has just entertained me. 🐿️💨
Dama, if you ever stop doing deep dives on uniform stuff, I'll come find you!! I can't get enough. Seems related, I'm currently gearing up to watch 9 innings of a regular season baseball game on July 24th (Indians). I'm even grilling. For context, I've always found baseball WAY more entertaining in the morning paper (!).
Amazing stuff on the respect for science, facts, experts, etc. It's been a very, very weird time. The phrase "Post Truth" was coined in the 1990s and Sorkin brought it back up during Freedom Fries, but it became far, far more salient late in 2016. I'm so excited to move forward, all of us. I'll stop.
Gophers? Dama's a domer!
I love the newer, bolder colors and the classic striping. It's just perfect.
LOL, thanks, Shep! You know I love this shit. I may make this thread into general branding geekery, if y'all like it. Recently, I've been super into soccer badges (probably because that's all that's on to watch, LOL) and that's been fun, too. Yeah, let's not make things "political" here and my jersey isn't intended as such. It's really a statement of support for health care and public health folks, who do, in fact, trust epi, every day, to protect themselves and their families. We all should do the same. That ain't political. I don't want ANYONE to die of this forking disease. I want even stupid, annoying people to live their lives in peace. ;) For real though, the biggest, saddest, loneliest tragedy I can imagine is to die, alone, on a vent, because...why? Senseless. So, yeah, let's enjoy stupid shit that lightens our world here. But let's trust epi, to make the real world a little lighter in the future, too.
I still have to get the Mayfield jersey I said I would when we took a QB with the first overall pick. I could probably find one of the old-soon-to-be-laughed-in-to-obscurity jerseys just to have one . Maybe one of the orange ones hahaha
I can't unsee Mack modeling that orange abomination. I felt sorry for him.
Lmaoooo there it is!
I'm blind. Or maybe I just don't wanna see anymore.
I'm only posting because the menus says EE posted here 8 hours ago... and it's not showing up for me.
You might have to scroll up in the thread. If we “reply”, it sticks up under that post, if we “comment”, it stays chronologically in the thread ... I’m pretty sure.
Aaaah, that makes sense. Orange on top of brown... dear lord, that is some deeply ugly shit even with everything else right.

I mean, the Bills have their rooks in their uni's, Brady & Gronk were in the new Tampa uni's months ago, get the lead out Browns.
We are starting to see players in uniforms from a lot of teams...but still no players in new Browns uniforms. Let's go Berry & Co....get us some fresh images in those new unis!!!!!!!!
I wanna see players in the new all brown uniforms, or the white on brown. I love it all... but we've certainly seen the other kits before.
I want to see them all! Now that everyone is in town, let's have more than a non-specific dude in a #20.
I wanna see our WR's in all white (DPJ and Njoku are gonna rock'em), Baker in the new all-brown, and Myles in the white jersey and brown pants.
I kinda like that the Browns are holding back a little. Plus, their practice unis never really changed at all so they're pretty close to in uniform now. That said, I'm most excited for the classic brown/white, then the new white/brown, then the all-brown for a special occasion. I really think the Color Rush brown with orange stripe pants are going to pop with the classic white jersey. I predict that over time, that combo will look the "most modern". And, ironically, that kit will make the old-school all-whites look "fresh and clean" after a while, which is kind of a cool way to do a fake uniform reboot, LOL.
Yeah, the white/brown is kinda genius, the way the pants and shoulder stripes line up (which they accentuated with #20's pose). That's a terrific kit.
Y'all know I'm about mo' brown mo' better, and I was campaigning for brown-outs that didn't have stripes on the pants, like Saints and Ravens. I hope they wear them at least a few times for key matchups.
But there's nothing I don't like. I don't get very stoked for all-white but that's me. I totally get the love for them yet can't quite catch it.
Y'know, it's funny, i was sick of the all-whites because they seemed "old fashioned" and "boring" but then we got the 2015 Orangepacalypse and suddenly my tastes were very much clarified. I still don't love the old-school all-white but as I said above, now that we have the new default brown/orange stripe pants to pair with white top, and the traditional brown top/white pants, then an occasional all-white to pair with the occasional all-brown is pretty damn sweet. I really couldn't be happier with how the rebooted classics came out. There's really something for everyone, even PGL with the orange on brown kit! I won't say it was "worth" the last five years of retina burn-in but...I'm just relieved we look like the Browns again. And I dig the SHIT out of this new jersey! Can't wait for it to cool off so I can wear it!
