It's tough to see it making any sense for the team and he has zero leverage now that Hooper and Harrison are in the fold. He's younger and more talented than his current value, basically.
Just don't see it. I mean, sure, if Jax offered Yannick for Njoku and a 3rd, I'd jump. But that's not happening.
Over recent months, Njoku seemed excited to be part of the changes to the coaching staff, front office and even the overall roster. Part of it was likely due to his issues with Kitchens being resolved, but he did seem genuinely exicted and comfortable.
I suspect this change of heart is due to Rosenhaus pushing lesser opportunities in a crowded tight end room leading to fewer opportunities to sign a top tier second contract. Njoku is listening. You have to give Rosenhaus credit, he has Jedi mind tricks when it comes to fluctuations in his 10%.
Interesting to read the Browns aren't interested in making a move. Perhaps unwilling to lose a weapon during such a vital time, especially one who will almost certainly accrue a decent compensation selection.
Personally, I am not too worried. With Hooper and Harrison, tight end depth isn't an issue for us. If we can get appropriate value to move Njoku, so be it. If we can't get the right value, he's going to have to show maturity and stick it out.
The Browns most likely aren't willing to make a move because Njoku's value is virtually zero. He was not a reliable receiving or blocking TE prior to his injury. Look liked Tarzan, played like Jane. He was in the doghouse after his injury and wasn't able to prove he can be consistent or productive. Anybody trading for him will consider him a buy low candidate with potential up-side.
If the Browns plan on trading him, it would be more advantageous to play him through the first part of the season and show he can be productive to attempt to raise his value.
We'll see.
Said it elsewhere....he is looking at 50 targets or so based on the TE room, the combo of Landry/OBJ, and the combo of Chubb/Hunt. Not a great place to be coming into a contract negotiation year. I get it. Disappointing, but I get it.
They'd only trade him if somebody offered based on potential and draft slot. Draft picks are overvalued but a player trade might work. Read that Dallas could be interested. I just don't see it happening, value's in the basement.
"If there's promising news for the Browns and they are inclined to want to move Njoku, the market for tight ends has been pretty good as illustrated by the curious trade made the Atlanta Falcons for Hayden Hurst, giving up a second round pick and fifth round pick, getting a fourth round pick back along with Hurst."
So, it would go...
Browns receive:
2021 2nd rounder
2021 5th rounder
Team X receives:
David Njoku
2021 4th rounder
====
Our 2021 draft selections would then be:
1st rounder
2nd rounder
2nd rounder (via Njoku)
3rd rounder
3rd rounder (via Nola, draft day 2020 trade-back)
4th rounder (via Philly, for Avery)
5th rounder
5th rounder (via LAR, for Corbett)
5th rounder (via Njoku)
6th rounder
7th rounder
11 total picks, up from the current 10 picks, and 5 of them in the first 3 rounds.
BDU - spot on as always. This sure reeks of an agent getting in a player's ear and telling him the grass will be so much greener elsewhere. Nothing wrong with that, it is his job. ButI agree, 85's value as a trade chip is in the crapper currently.
There is a popular tweet current circulating amongst Browns fans which says something along the lines of, "The idea of David Njoku has always been so much more fun than the reality of David Njoku."
The guy has a blend of size and athleticism which very few can match, and he's had some moments which flash the type of ability which belongs to those whose names sit on All-Pro lists, but he's never been able to do it with any consistency and his play is often marred with headscratching mistakes.
Agreed with those saying a trade is an issue because his value is so low. Trading him for a 4th or 5th just cannot happen. He's young, cheap and talented. While never living up to the draft hype, he's not the kind of player you can just hand off for nothing.
Fingers crossed the 'trade me before camp' angle is agent driven rather than player driven. Although he somewhat has to play otherwise he risks voiding free agency.
Kinda think our best hope would be value added along with a draft pick for a serious player at a position of need (LB, edge). Not sure if Dallas or Atlanta has one of those for us, but that would be the win-win, I think.
I don't NOT get the point from his side. He needs numbers and Hooper/Harrison additions weren't good news in the Njoku camp. The Vikings have good TEs but they split up that pie so much, neither's getting "money numbers."
It's an interesting aspect of this offense, where the ball is really evenly distributed. You're gonna have guys who just can't be down for that, like Diggs.
I am kinda surprised given the vibe from his instagram is that he's been working hard and is ready to rock. Given that his spot isn't essentially on a platter for him it's the right thing to see but the trade posturing is not really surprising in light of the players we have brought in at his position.
He's never been what we hoped he might be. He's never had more than what a half dozen TD's in a season if that. Some teams might want to have a guy like him on their roster but IMO he's great depth for us at worst and at best another potential playmaker one of many we can deploy at once.
Josina had an update. Browns very much have him in their plans and saw him breaking out... but he's apparently wanted out for a while now, probably since the second TE was added. She says Bears are monitoring (and we've heard Cowboys and Falcons).
Maybe there's enough of a market to lead to something of immediate value (again, thinking LB/edge).
I guess drafting an award winning TE and signing the top free agent TE has it's ramifications.
Petrick says the Browns will not do it.
It's tough to see it making any sense for the team and he has zero leverage now that Hooper and Harrison are in the fold. He's younger and more talented than his current value, basically.

Interesting decision from Njoku.

It‘s wild. Thought he was on-board.
Oh, and I’m a Carlson fan for TE2 or TE3

A full preseason would have been nice on this front. Maybe it'd convince him, maybe it'd showcase him, but it couldn't have hurt.

current estimates are 4th or 5th....not moving him for that. Especially if they see themselves as playoff contenders this year
Agree there.
Interesting point on SI:

Hmmmm. I think I'd take that.
I think I would have to do that as well. Carlson could step into Njoku's spot.

As usual. Terry Pluto makes a lot of sense.

Me too. He seems focused and it looked, from the outside, he and the organization we back to the same page. Interviews were solid too.
Maybe a vibe, or undesirable roll, came out of those umpteen Zoom meetings.

Lets see if this works - here is the tweet JSS
