Figured we could talk about who's out there we might want at safety (assuming the corners are just lightly dinged).
- I did not realize the year Logan Ryan had last year (118 tackles, 18 PDs, 4 picks). I assume with that tackle total he was moved to safety? He's 29 and paying him massively would seem to go against the way AB is squaring up the cap. Why is he still on the market?
- Earl Thomas will be a discussion. He's still Earl Thomas and only like 30. But what is the deal on him off the field? I've lost track.
- Tony Jefferson is said to be healthy, as was pointed out here elsewhere. He dissed the Browns bad... but back then, we deserved it.
- 24/7 brought up Brandon Carr. He's 34 but keeps doing whatever's asked of him, CB or S. If we wanted to bring someone in strictly for depth, he'd be it.
- I feel like we're set at LB with Smith coming in to hold the fort for a month or so while Mack heals.
Thoughts?
92.3 just speculated that we throw MORE MONEY at Clowney thinking that more pressure on the QBs will make it easier on whatever Safeties we have.
Just read an SI thing indicating the Browns like their DB room still and might be looking for someone more "situational." The depth at corner helps too, assuming those dings are minor.
The depth is really showing up under these somewhat macabre situations. I'm not crying over a Joseph-Redwine-Denzel-Greedy starting group, or KJ and Sendejo next up.
But I still think we'll be looking to round it out.
Jefferson just dissed the Browns again on Twitter... guess that’s a bridge burned.

Yeah, that hate is real for some reason.
The more I dig, the more I want Logan Ryan. He's only 29 and eager to become a full-time safety. He already played like one (118 total tackles) but also had a hefty 18 PDs and 4 INTs. He can play.
We don't know when (or sadly, if) Delpit will be all the way back. It could be next August but he might not be all the way back until 2022. And that's a bummer, because he'll basically be a rookie next year, a guy who needs live reps. Even I can't get sunny about a torn achilles.
Point being: I'd go all in on Ryan, 3 or 4 years. Let him be one of the leaders of your defense. He fits perfectly next to Karl Joseph, one of the camp stars so far (he's healthy and showing out).
Agreed. You can front load the contract. That accomplishes two goals. That move increases your chances of signing him because Logan gets his money now; and two - you can also make the argument that you have allowed Logan (formerly unemployed) to keep his dignity by offering a more than fair contract that makes him feel needed and wanted.

“ I had a first-round grade on Curtis Weaver. My comparison for him was Jerry Hughes. Basically checked all the boxes for me. 7.00 three cone at 6’2” / 265 was freaky.
If I was a GM, I’d grab him now & stash him on my IR before he reverts to Dolphins IR list.”

whatever you say, Andrew Berry's 216 account.
@BDU What's the story on his foot injury though?
====
Found it on Phinisder
Under NFL rules, non-vested players must pass through waivers with an injured designation before being added to a team’s IR list. The rule prevents teams from stashing young players on IR for a year if they are not ready to be immediate contributors. Weaver, who sustained a presumed season-ending foot injury, will likely remain on the Browns’ roster until Week 1 of the regular season, when he can then be added to Cleveland’s IR list without the waivers process.
Weaver was seen as a steal by the Dolphins, with an unexpected fall to the fifth round...
I will say this, the national media types and Browns fans AB just added a "free 5th round 2020 pick". The Dolphins fans seem to be a little ticked.
I'm having a brainfart ... why wasn't Delpit subject to the same waiver process?
Tidbits:
Curtis Weaver was Todd McShay’s #20 overall prospect & he was Mel Kiper JR’s #2 EDGE before the draft, and the Browns are taking a low-risk flyer on him.
BUT, there are rumblings he just wasn't getting around OT's in camp, so the Phins released him, vs placing him on their IR immediately (like the Browns did with Delpit).
I'm okay with picking up a struggling rookie. Ultimately, he spends a year on IR before getting an opportunity to make an impression next training camp after a year of NFL strength and conditioning, and rehabilitation training.
Andrew Berry with one eye to the future? I am shocked, said nobody. Ever.
I have no idea what the Dolphins were doing. Even if he was off to a disappointing start to camp (if we can even call it that), it seems odd to risk losing a 5th round selection so quickly in to his career. We all know a 5th round selection is no guarantee to hang around long term, but it certainly isn't the kind of selection you're just flippant with.
It's actually quite perfect for us with Vernon on a one year deal. I assume Weaver will compete next camp with a veteran (Could even be Vernon) and a draft pick.
It was asked earlier in the thread and there didn't appear to be a good answer, but.......
Why did the the Dolphins have to expose Weaver to waivers and we were able to send Delpit directly to IR? Aren't they both non-vested players?
I'm pretty sure it has something to do with the training camp roster. If they want to clear a spot, you can risk sending a player through waivers and then put him on your IR right now, and clear the roster spot right now. Or, you can put him on IR now, but it he continues to occupy a training camp roster spot until week 1.
I think that's it anyway.
Speaking of the defense, Jordan Elliott yesterday was "wrecking the practice" per observers.
Nobody talks about Elliott, who I think was grossly under-drafted. I bet we'll be talking about him a lot pretty soon.
Who was the last guy we "snatched" in almost this exact way, a player a team hoped to slide onto IR? Seems like it was 3 or 4 years ago.
I feel like I get the picture on Weaver: He was underperforming and maybe out of shape because of his foot injury. Catch-22. So the Dolphins looked to slip him onto IR and clear that spot, gambling that nobody would want an injured 5th round pick.
But he clearly made AB's list, a guy they pondered. He'll have the year to heal and be directed by the Browns training staff. That cone time tells you he's got quicks.
Was it an o-lineman that didn't work out anyway? I too recall that snatch, and it was kind of considered a slight breech of etiquette, I think.
I think it was an OL, possibly a center? And yeah, whoever it was ain't around. But I recall thinking it was super cool.
I think it's one of those things that's both a breach and also clever-clever, depending on which side of the road you're on.
Malcolm Smith and this both make me feel like AB is always locked and loaded, knows the right answer to every question long before it's asked.
I remember that too. I thought it was a DB from San Fran, but now I'm thinking it was Marcus Martin from San Fran, a former 3rd round C. But I can't find anything about it being a controversial grab.
That's not ringing a bell. I have no short-term memory but I'm pretty solid when prompted (!). I definitely do not blame the pot because, you know, I like pot.
Curtis Weaver move and stashing him on IR like the Dolphins wanted to do... really intriguing. You get that guy in your program for 9 months or so before you judge the results. He and Delpit are indeed like a couple draft picks coming in next summer. Hope Delpit is a success story.
I shouldn't lock in on potential acquisitions like I'm doing with Ryan. I know better.
