The Mid-American Conference became the first conference at the Division I level to announce yesterday that all fall sports were being canceled for the 2020 season.
I am sure this action is a direct result of so many, if not all, of the power 5 conferences going to a "conference only" schedule. That means that schools, like The University of Akron, will miss out on the necessary big paydays they would have received by playing those road games. Without those revenues conference wide, this was a sad but logical decision.
It's unfortunate that the MAC decided to not also go to a conference only schedule and instead chose to cancel their season. The reality is that, if this season is considered a success, this season may be a test for future schedules similar to this year and the smaller conference may be left in the cold more often moving forward.
