Good morning boys and girls - here is my initial entry into the draft eligible players for the 2020 NFL Draft. Meet Clemson OLB Isaiah Simmons. Steve Wilks and his staff are going to love and hate this kid all at the same time.
They will love him because of his size and his athleticism. Isaiah stands a proud 6'4" and checks in at 225 lbs. Originally, Isaiah was a safety - but was recently converted to OLB. That's where the coaches may lovingly hate this kid - they won't know where to line him up at. Brooksie's solution: Play him at all of the above. For instance:
Think of the damage he could do to an offense from the strong safety position. Need a TE covered coming down the seam? Check. Need run support to deny the ball carrier a lane to turn up field? Check. And a WR coming across the middle better keep his head on a swivel.....
As an OLB, he could impact negatively on an offense by having the jets to stay with a RB on a wheel route. With the natural head start he would get from 5 yds off the LOS, he could easily engage an OL and have the strength to blow up his blocking intentions - allowing his buddies to clean up on the running play.
And lastly, Isaiah has good "football" speed and is a gifted tackler. If he is sent on a search and destroy mission to the QB - you better have accounted for him in your pass pro scheme. Because, if you didn't - you may be needing to have your back up QB start taking snaps on the sidelines.
