Oh Jeffery, Oh Jeffery........ what might of been.
Jeffery Simmons is an explosive athlete that can be effective as a 5 tech, a 3 tech, or straight up on the nose. The reality of Jeffery's situation is he will probably lose all of the 2019 while rehabbing his injured knee.
It was announced a week ago that Jeffery had torn his ACL while preparing for the NFL combine. The season will start at the beginning of September - seven months away. That is probably too aggressive of a rehab schedule to fantasize about being ready week 1.
So, the question becomes - given that interior defensive tackle is such a glaring need for the Browns - do the Browns think that Jeffery's upside will make the wait worthwhile if they burn Pick 17 on him? Keep in mind that they need help NOW. This draft is a very deep DT class. That is why I would have to pass on Jeffery at 17, and select someone else capable of helping this season.
The timing of this injury was unfortunate to say the least. It probably causes Jeffery to fall out of Round 1. What if he is still there at 49? That may be the right time to select him. Take a look.
